Locals in Portugal are wonderfully peculiar, and the one aspect that distinguishes them from other neighboring countries, is the distinctive flavors and exotic cuisine that’ll instantly transport you to another planet. Whether you’re exploring the mountains in the north or the plains of the south, Portugal’s culinary delights will leave you begging for more. After all, it’s Mediterranean food at its finest. The fusion of flavors from these 6 foods alone will surely convince you why food is an integral part of Portuguese life. Here’s a list of foods in Portugal you can’t miss..

1  Terylene Sandwich

It looks like pieces of prosciutto placed in a three layered English Muffin sandwich, but it’s so much more than that. The sandwich takes 24 hours to make, so you already know that good things come to those who wait. Why does it take so long? Because the roasted pork loin and smoked ham takes 20 hours to cure by roasting it with a combination of tomatoes, rosemary, garlic, chili peppers, and wine. Then the juices will melt into the double bun and the flavor will blend into your plate.

Grilled fish is the ultimate experience in Portugal. When the coarse salt coated fish is placed on the grill, the results are culinary magic, and don’t get rid of that charred skin because that’s where the powerful taste comes from. Plus, the drizzling of olive oil on the crinkly skin is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted.



In Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, you can treat yourself to their staple dish, sardinhas, (sardines) cooked in a coal-fired grill. To spice things up, you’ll also add some grilled tomato slices, onions, lettuce, and bell pepper, to a piece of bread. Then finish it off with a bit of coarse salt, some vinegar, and olive oil, and you’ll never go back to eating sardines out of tin can, that’s for sure.


Ameijoas A Bolhao Pato

Clams in Portugal may very well be one of the best appetizers there is. The Ameijoas, or clams are marinated in olive oil and served in a steaming pot. You can also opt for a lighter sauce to allow the mollusks briny juices to integrate with the olive oil. Once you’re done with the clams, dab some bread all over the sauce to finish off this incredible culinary experience.


Acorda De Marisco

Although the recipe varies according to region, it’s essentially a seafood bread stew that will leave you hungry for more. It’s a hearty dish full of an assortment of shellfish that’s combined with soaked bread simmered in olive oil and garlic sauté, with cilantro and eggs added to the mix for a delicious meal. What’s not to love?



There are so many different ways you can enjoy this salted, dried cod fish dish in Portugal. Some may include a casserole of shredded cod with caramelized onions, boiled eggs, olives and potatoes, while another dish may include shredded cod, fried potato strips with onions and scrambled eggs. But since the salting and drying of bacalhau can be too intense, you can counter the overdose of sodium with a bit of olive oil.

  • I guess my last trip to the Arctic was my last icy adventure for the season. I’ve had 4 since the beginning of the year and despite being a beach girl, I can’t wait to go back!   • I first came to Ivalo last year, and today, almost a year ago, I’m back here with incredible people who trusted me as I guided them into the wilderness beyond the arctic circle. From huskies to ice fishing to snowmobiling at night as we search for the lights and even tasting arctic cuisine, every single one of them had the adventure in them screaming to come out. Our phones were somewhere in our backpack and not a care in the world of anything but the moment we were in. For the longest time, it felt nice being around people who gets it and who travel to experience new things for their own validation and no one else’s.   • When you decide to leave and take that chance out on your own, your road won't be paved in colored tiles and most of the time you will be told by friends and strangers that you won’t be able to last so long or that your nuts and possibly judged on every move that you make. As I moved on with my dreams and my days turned into months then years, I’ve had mixed feelings of happiness and being afraid. As someone who loves their own space and is comfortable on my own, I’ve had times where things didn’t always go my way instantly but I knew it eventually falls into place. I might have fallen flat on my face sometimes, and have underestimated my own capabilities at some moments... but I’m more confident than I was when I first started and what made me even braver, was my willingness to live up to these moments because in the end, it was all worth it. #TravelwithTJD
