Here’s How You Know You Found The Best Travel Buddy EverLike4

A trip will only be successful if you’re careful enough to pack light, but smart, did the homework and know exactly what to do, (and what not to do) in a foreign land you’ll soon call “home” for a few weeks! But choose the wrong travel buddy and your luxurious and paradisiac vacays will suddenly turn into a nightmare, where you’ll slowly drown in boredom, with every single excursion, or yawn-inducing activities your lame travel buddy proposes.

No one can bail you out of a bad trip, but there are many ways you can tell if the girl you just met at a party, or that friend you’ve been hanging out since forever would make an excellent travel buddy on your next adventure. Here’s how to tell if your friend has the potential to ruin your trip or take it to the next level.

1. A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

If you already have a friend you consider a soulmate in your life, chances are you will get along in most scenarios during a trip. The key is to be similar in as many ways as possible, but also different enough to complement each other. This balance will come in handy during your dream trip, particularly if you’re the type of gal that needs a little push here and there from your overly-charismatic and adventurous friend!

2. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Adaptation saves lives—but it also saves trips and friendships. You probably will not agree with everything that’s planned, but it is key to know how to meet your travel buddy half way. A give-and-take attitude will help run your trip smoothly. Choose someone who can be a great compromiser and you’ll be ready to take off any minute. Salsa lessons AND hiking on the same day? It might be exhausting, but when in Rome!

3. TO DECIDE OR NOT TO DECIDE

That’s the question. Don’t you just hate it when you give your friend options and all they say is “whatever, you choose”? WHATEVER IS NOT AN OPTION! Find a travel buddy who knows what he/she want and is not afraid to say: it will make things sooo much easier.

4. AS IF IT WERE THE FIRST TIME

Choose a travel buddy who enjoys local sights as much as touristy landmarks—that’s part of any trip after all! Travel like a local but allow yourself to take that selfie next to the popular Eiffel Tower so you can post it on Instagram if that’s your thing. Find someone who gets amazed at the beautiful sights, popular and unpopular, almost as if it were the first time they traveled.

5. SPONTANEITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT

If you’re anything like me, you probably plan everything out before traveling. Plane tickets, hotel rooms, even museum passes and cheap taxi cabs. But just as in life itself, trips can get so much better if you make plans on the spot: the thrill of adventure will make you explore any city in a totally different way—go for it!

6. A RESPONSIBLE PARTY OF TWO

Or three. Or four. No matter how many people you’re traveling with, at least one of you has to be the designated person in charge—but definitely all have to show some responsibility. If you’re splitting up, make sure to gather on time; and try to stay away from suspicious neighborhoods. Things like that will keep everyone safe and sound.

7. A FOOD SCIENTIST

If you know someone who loves to experiment with food and try new dishes, that’s a great sign you’ll enjoy every waking moment with them on that far away land. New countries can also be explored through food; so don’t forget to pack your taste buds to go on this journey with you. Bon appetite!

8. EXPLORING ALL AVENUES

The first thing most tourists do when they arrive at their destination is ask for a map. Though that’s recommended, it’s also fun to travel with an adventurous spirit who is curious and willing to go off the beaten path. Wandering around without a single clue is a thrill few travelers dare to enjoy! Always make sure you ask locals about the safety of certain areas, but don’t be afraid to get lost.

9. TRAVELERS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN

If someone you know is not afraid of making a fool of themselves, that’s a good sign they’ll be one hell of a good travel buddy. Trips should be fun: take goofy pictures to capture pics you’ll love to go back to later, make a fool of yourself after one too many margaritas, and don’t be afraid to kiss that stranger who speaks a lick of English! A good sense of humor, a positive attitude and good communication skills will make a huge difference during any trip.

10. DON’T JUDGE A TRAVELER BY ITS COVER

The most important part about sharing a trip with someone is allowing yourself to be the real you. People criticize enough back home; you don’t need a judge with you while you go sightseeing. Having confidence in your travel buddy is key for feeling like at home even when you’re miles away. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight and that charismatic daredevil you chose to go on your trip will

What a great article Michelle, and I completely agree that if you travel with the incorrect person your trip can easily turn upside down no matter what destination you are in. I am thankful that I am fortunate enough to have my hubby as my travel partner and that we both share the same interests. Though at times, we have to compromise on somethings.

  • Always believe in Magic 💫
  • It’s only a matter of days... going back to reality 💫

  • I’d like to wake up here again - without any expectations... even if it’s just for a little while. What about you?
  • This is my far far away 💞
Where is yours?
  • I read once that “awareness is what keeps any relationship strong”... so, while I understand that we are the master of our own fate, understand that those around you play a major role in your life, but, don’t ever mistake kindness to weakness... 💫
  • Someone said to me today: “Some people are ‘once in a lifetime’ type of people. There is no upgrade after that.” That’s a whole new level of appreciation.
Hope you have those people in your life.
Have a beautiful weekend 💞
  • Take a deep breath, and remember who the f*** you are! ;) Good morning 💞
  • I’ve posted this photo many times and it’s still one of my favorite moments.
I listened to a podcast yesterday and it resonated with me so much on the topic of earning trust in the corporate world “Earning trust: consistency in your behavior - trust is developed and established through consistency in behavior”
I’ve often said that if you have so much moodiness in your life, you will lack leadership and trust, It’s something I truly believe in people. If you want to earn trust, be consistent in your behavior, in your choices and your words... most importantly, in what you believe in... otherwise, people will pull back. Think about that for your Thursday mood :)
  • It’s been a while since I’ve done a just “pick up and go”. The picture I took from outside my room is a reminder of that time in Kenya. Yep, it’s a giraffe.
Lately, everything has been so planned and that spontaneous “go” is something I sort of miss.
There are definitely few things I’d want to do... for example drive a motorhome somewhere far far away, surf in the arctic... re-visit Kenya... explore Latin America...those are just few of the things.
If you were to pick up and go, where would you go and what would you do?
  • Summer in @ourfinland was one of my highlights of 2019. On a mission with @travelwithtjd - we explored the south coast and witness the magic of the midnight sun while driving North West.
From cabin life by the lake, to glass houses by the sea. We hiked, went on road trips, went island hopping, ate a LOT, took ATVs, did BBQs and jumped into the lake!
Join @dennisstever and I on our @travelwithtjd Finland Summer Series on the 21st of June - 26th June 2020, as we take you through the coast and into the wilderness and experience the summer activities that Finland has to offer. • I was always in a hurry to be someone, always in a hurry to become something and do everything I set my mind to. I didn’t waste my time on things or people that would get me nowhere.
But, I crave a slow life, a simple life filled with adventures. No fast cars or expensive homes and for almost all my life, I’ve built a life in which I almost never needed to escape from. I’ve started my year with intentions to keep me grounded... and I intend to focus more on them.
This is my beautiful reality and this photo represents that to me.
  • I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible humans on our @travelwithtjd trips.
I'm constantly learning from my mistakes and from others and I'm slowly acquiring patience and acceptance.
I’ve met empowering souls who braved the arctic and chose to kick their fear to the curb and go on a life changing journey with us.
I can’t help but be so grateful and in love with everything they have given and taught me, and that’s how I remember 2019. Through those I’ve met on our TJD trips, through their support.
My message to them now is this:
I know... that just because you carry your load well, doesn’t mean its not heavy... So, choose wisely.
Choose yourself first.
Love strong and fiercely.
Love with everything that you have.
Don’t follow rules, break away from expectations. I'm changing...I'm growing... and I always chose to live the life I’ve always dreamed of, and not what others expect of me.
Be fearless. Always remember that mental connection is stronger than physical attraction.
And most of all, be a giver, but never one without boundaries... Happy 2020.
Love, Michelle
