Here’s How You Know You Found The Best Travel Buddy EverLike4

A trip will only be successful if you’re careful enough to pack light, but smart, did the homework and know exactly what to do, (and what not to do) in a foreign land you’ll soon call “home” for a few weeks! But choose the wrong travel buddy and your luxurious and paradisiac vacays will suddenly turn into a nightmare, where you’ll slowly drown in boredom, with every single excursion, or yawn-inducing activities your lame travel buddy proposes.

No one can bail you out of a bad trip, but there are many ways you can tell if the girl you just met at a party, or that friend you’ve been hanging out since forever would make an excellent travel buddy on your next adventure. Here’s how to tell if your friend has the potential to ruin your trip or take it to the next level.

1. A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

If you already have a friend you consider a soulmate in your life, chances are you will get along in most scenarios during a trip. The key is to be similar in as many ways as possible, but also different enough to complement each other. This balance will come in handy during your dream trip, particularly if you’re the type of gal that needs a little push here and there from your overly-charismatic and adventurous friend!

2. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Adaptation saves lives—but it also saves trips and friendships. You probably will not agree with everything that’s planned, but it is key to know how to meet your travel buddy half way. A give-and-take attitude will help run your trip smoothly. Choose someone who can be a great compromiser and you’ll be ready to take off any minute. Salsa lessons AND hiking on the same day? It might be exhausting, but when in Rome!

3. TO DECIDE OR NOT TO DECIDE

That’s the question. Don’t you just hate it when you give your friend options and all they say is “whatever, you choose”? WHATEVER IS NOT AN OPTION! Find a travel buddy who knows what he/she want and is not afraid to say: it will make things sooo much easier.

4. AS IF IT WERE THE FIRST TIME

Choose a travel buddy who enjoys local sights as much as touristy landmarks—that’s part of any trip after all! Travel like a local but allow yourself to take that selfie next to the popular Eiffel Tower so you can post it on Instagram if that’s your thing. Find someone who gets amazed at the beautiful sights, popular and unpopular, almost as if it were the first time they traveled.

5. SPONTANEITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT

If you’re anything like me, you probably plan everything out before traveling. Plane tickets, hotel rooms, even museum passes and cheap taxi cabs. But just as in life itself, trips can get so much better if you make plans on the spot: the thrill of adventure will make you explore any city in a totally different way—go for it!

6. A RESPONSIBLE PARTY OF TWO

Or three. Or four. No matter how many people you’re traveling with, at least one of you has to be the designated person in charge—but definitely all have to show some responsibility. If you’re splitting up, make sure to gather on time; and try to stay away from suspicious neighborhoods. Things like that will keep everyone safe and sound.

7. A FOOD SCIENTIST

If you know someone who loves to experiment with food and try new dishes, that’s a great sign you’ll enjoy every waking moment with them on that far away land. New countries can also be explored through food; so don’t forget to pack your taste buds to go on this journey with you. Bon appetite!

8. EXPLORING ALL AVENUES

The first thing most tourists do when they arrive at their destination is ask for a map. Though that’s recommended, it’s also fun to travel with an adventurous spirit who is curious and willing to go off the beaten path. Wandering around without a single clue is a thrill few travelers dare to enjoy! Always make sure you ask locals about the safety of certain areas, but don’t be afraid to get lost.

9. TRAVELERS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN

If someone you know is not afraid of making a fool of themselves, that’s a good sign they’ll be one hell of a good travel buddy. Trips should be fun: take goofy pictures to capture pics you’ll love to go back to later, make a fool of yourself after one too many margaritas, and don’t be afraid to kiss that stranger who speaks a lick of English! A good sense of humor, a positive attitude and good communication skills will make a huge difference during any trip.

10. DON’T JUDGE A TRAVELER BY ITS COVER

The most important part about sharing a trip with someone is allowing yourself to be the real you. People criticize enough back home; you don’t need a judge with you while you go sightseeing. Having confidence in your travel buddy is key for feeling like at home even when you’re miles away. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight and that charismatic daredevil you chose to go on your trip will

What a great article Michelle, and I completely agree that if you travel with the incorrect person your trip can easily turn upside down no matter what destination you are in. I am thankful that I am fortunate enough to have my hubby as my travel partner and that we both share the same interests. Though at times, we have to compromise on somethings.

  • I hope you find that place one day. Where the chaos inside is understood and your heart feels at home... no matter where you are. 💫
  • Lost and unlost... Lost and unlost... Over and over again.
It was almost midnight, (Yes, this is how midnight looks like) where the sun never sets till sunrise, and we decided to climb up the hill to see where we actually anchored the boat, knowing this was a remote island. The wind was pushing us back and forth and we kept losing balance, no tripod would ever stand-alone. Then, when we reached the top, both Dennis and I froze, dropped to the ground from the shock and suddenly we were numb. The light from the midnight sun reflected the mountains, the sea, the grass and the skies turned pink and purple!! All of a sudden I had a rush of emotions that I couldn’t hold inside of me and my eyes were filled with tears, mostly from the wind and mostly from not knowing how to deal with so much feelings.
This was a reality I would always want to stay awake for. Then, @dennisstever pulled his camera and took my picture when I was in my moment and I’m so grateful for that!! @pukkatravels @travelwithtjd
  • They say, reality is a projection of your thoughts. I’ve dreamed about sailing north of the arctic for years... I never doubted for a second that it would not happen ‘one day’ but, nothing every prepared me for what I’m experiencing on this trip witnessing the magic of the midnight sun!! I’ve seen and felt things I never imagined existed or at least only on @natgeotravel magazines. This is the start of my 3 day journey sailing in the arctic! 💫

I’m also very excited to announce our new partnership with @pukkatravels for our next @travelwithtjd #TravelWithTJD in October and now, you can join me too! Information will be up tonight on the link in bio!
  • I know escapism is real to so many of us... but you can’t escape yourself and, travel won’t be the answer, so learn to love every single weakness and strength you have because no matter where you go, your thoughts go with you... nothing will disappear just because you can’t see what’s going on. 💫
  • There is something so incredibly special and cozy about boutique hotels that I love so much... like @constancehotels - Do you prefer large resorts or boutique properties?
  • We all have different reasons for forgetting to breathe... and most of us are breathing the best way we can... I think I’m ready to get back out there 💫
  • It’s the ‘have you seen the way he looks at her’ kind of love I have with you 💫
  • What do you see? It’s so easy to fall in love with landscapes and nature in Sweden. I know some of you have realized my insane fascination with Scandinavia but I just can’t help it. Maybe it’s because I am familiar with isolation and I embrace it so well... It keeps my creativity as fierce as ever and it never gets lonely. Maybe it’s because I love the adventure and photography so much... I’m not sure what it is.
This is called The Mirrorcube - camouflaged mirrored walls reflecting the surrounding. I can’t wait to return!
  • This simply makes me smile! Happy Sunday everyone! Can you spot the baby giraffe? 😊
  • I’m sorting out my summer plans today and added Portugal again! I’m excited to be going back and exploring more landscapes, culture, food, sailing and the incredible nightlife! There is a whole article on my last trip and guides on my website! What are your summer plans?
  • I gave you a heart stronger than a thousand warriors... but it will take you years to learn that not everyone loves like you do... 💫
  • Not bad for a view outside my room window! She looks like she’s waiting for me to come out and play ☺️ - What do you think?
