Breakfast in Chiang Mai

Exploring The Northern Thailand

I arrived in Chiang Mai after a hectic week in Bangkok. My expectations were already high for this northern Thai city, which is known for its temples, proximity to mountains, elephant sanctuaries (please choose yours wisely and do not support organizations that promote elephant riding or any other forms of abuse).

Shortly after arrival, I headed out to the hipster part of town otherwise known as Nimman where I lost myself aimlessly between the small streets, some of which were so quaint that all you could hear was the rustling of the leaves being caressed by the January breeze. Romance aside, it did not take me long to reach the first stop on my itinerary, Rustic and Blue where I had my first cup of soul-hugging coffee in the city. It did not take me long to realize that I will be having many cups of coffee in this town (5 in one day once to be exact) so I gave myself the freedom to serendipitously discover new places while also trying the ones I already had on my itinerary.

After one week in town, here is my list of recommended coffee/breakfast spots in Chiang Mai:

FAKTARA COFFEE & RESTAURANT

This place has a cute little garden in the back of the street on which it is located. It serves one of the best breakfasts I had in Chiang Mai — do not miss the French toast with fresh mango and cashews.

SS1254372

Do not be alarmed by the weird name of this café which is located inside a futuristic art gallery so double win. The breakfast was one of the healthiest I have ever had — could actually feel the nutrients going through my body — and the coffee is solid.

ABCD A BETTER CUP and DESIGN

Has a mean cup of coffee which is also served in a cute garden. I do not recall how I stumbled upon this one but I remember it was a bit out of the way.

MALIPAI ROASTERY & CAFE

Probably the best breakfast I had in Chiang Mai. I mean why hasn’t anyone told me that an omelet with spicy shrimp on steamed rice would taste so good! And good luck going back to having regular eggs after that.

TRAILER COFFEE

It has a couple of very small branches in town and I ended up stumbling upon the branch I didn’t intend to go to. The service is quick and friendly and the coffee is smooth but strong.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

A very close second in the list of best breakfasts in town. They serve what they call “ugly” food, which means they include fruits and vegetables that were naturally deformed. The end result is surprisingly not any less delicious or instagrammable. I came back here twice. Their apple, granola, cinnamon, and raisin on toast is simply divine.

A DAY IN CHIANG MAI

When I walked into this place, I felt it was a bit pretentious, but my feeling quickly disappeared when I had my first sip of their coffee. They also serve small pastries — the small matcha cake was sublime.

AKHA AMA COFFEE

Probably has the coolest interior design of all the places on the list, and their coffee was an out of this world experience.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHIANG MAI

I stayed for a few days in an Airbnb and then at the Shangri-La, which is ideally located close to the action but quiet enough for a good night’s sleep. You can check my review of the hotel below.

  • Lebanon in summer is all about exploring. Found this new hip beach bar on the coast of Byblos. The graffiti on the wall, the hanging hammocks in the water and the vibe, makes this place one of the cutest beach clubs I’ve seen so far. I love my beautiful home 🇱🇧
  • The last time I switched my laptop on was 5 days ago. The last time that happened was exactly a year ago. My phone is most of the time misplaced far away from me, my camera is still in my bag, my mind is switched off and I’m surrounded with love 💕and music 🎶. So happy to be back in Lebanon on my official summer break.
  • Home sweetest home ❤️
  • I love the the 3 AM version of people... Honest, vulnerable and real.
  • I have some sort of mental block this morning... which is a good thing so... Happy Thursday ☀️
  • This is a (long) thank you post... To my teachers.
Thank you for showing me my true strength... Not only physical strength, but more importantly mental strength.
Thank you for allowing me to let go... Whenever I feel I need a break from the world, your shala is the first place I run to... and when I’m away, it’s the first place I think of when I practice on my own, miles away. The sound of my breathing alone, takes me back to the exact spot where I place my mat... and I’m fully transported back to the stillness and awareness.
Thank you for giving me a safe place to seek connection & allowing me to breathe... when I’m at my most vulnerable, you’ve made it ok for my tears to roll down my face in Savasana or during a posture, open up and just be me without any judgement.
Thank you for offering so much of yourself to allow me to grow through my practice... Thank you for teaching me the true meaning of yoga, how to practice not only on the mat, but off the mat too... Yoga is a natural state of mind and not whether or not you can touch your toes.
The light in me honors the light in you. Happy New moon

  • I’m still going through the photos I’ve taken during my trip to Menorca. Still can’t believe how beautiful the island is!
  • Last couple of days at work before heading back home 🇱🇧. What are your summer plans? Anything exciting?
  • Your memory feels like home to me.
So whenever my mind wanders, it always finds its way back to you 💫
  • Someone at work asked me the other day what my goals were... I told them to be happy. To be really really really F**** happy. What’s yours?
  • How much time do you spend planning for a trip? I still can’t get over the beautiful sunsets I’ve been lucky to experience on the island. I’ve also written two blog posts on guides to Menorca and what to watch out for prior booking.
I do usually spend a lot of time on research for my trips, months in advance and, for this specific trip, it was a little challenging finding a place to stay that matched what I was exactly looking for.
The search engine that worked well for me was @wegoarabia - as for flights, I didn’t have too many options from Barcelona but it worked out well. I mixed it between hotel stay and private villa stay for my 10 nights. Booked a car and took it really easy at the end!
